Sexual abuse by police officers

Revelations in the early part of December 2016 concerning the sexual abuse of victims or suspects by police officers was described, at the time, as “the most serious corruption issues facing the service”.  There were over 430 allegations of abuse of power made against 306 police officers, 20 community support officers and eight other staff members.  In nearly all of these cases it is alleged that sexual gain had been the motive of the abuse.

If you feel that you have been a victim of sexual abuse or harassment by a police officer while carrying out their duties, then you may be entitled to claim compensation.

The police force are there to protect and assist you regardless of the circumstances. No police officer has the right to demand sexual favours in return for assistance.  This is wrong in every way and you are never to blame.

The police force are responsible for the actions of their officers and if an officer, during the course of his employment/duty, acts in a way that gives rise to a civil claim then any claim can be brought directly against the police force.  This is a far better option as it means any payment will be made by the force’s insurers rather than attempting to get payment from the officer personally.
