Revelations in the early part of December 2016 concerning the sexual abuse of victims or suspects by police officers was described, at the time, as “the most serious corruption issues facing the service”. There were over 430 allegations of abuse of power made against 306 police officers, 20 community support officers and eight other staff members. In nearly all of these cases it is alleged that sexual gain had been the motive of the abuse.
Despite these large numbers there was evidence that only 40 officers or staff members had been dismissed for abusing their authority in this way.
